29th July, 2010
In the wake of the new Business Secretary’s, visit to the North West, the Plymouth Employment and Skills Board have called on Vince Cable to prioritize a similar visit to the South West.

Dr Graham Stirling, Chair of Plymouth Employment and Skills Board and Managing Director of Barden said: “We welcome Dr Cable’s commitment to the manufacturing sector and the creation of a highly skilled workforce. We share his aim to increase economic resilience by reducing the country’s dependence on the City.

“Developing a balanced economy also means looking at what’s going on across the UK and we are hopeful that this visit will be quickly followed by a tour of Plymouth and the South West.”

During his visit to Crewe, Dr Cable spoke of his desire to strengthen the manufacturing sector and build up our other knowledge industries.

Dr Stirling continued: “Our Advanced Engineering sector in the city is full of highly skilled professionals and with it’s rural image, industry in the South West can be forgotten in Whitehall.

“It is vital that the Business Secretary show’s his equal commitment to the manufacturing sector here in Plymouth and understands the sheer diversity of business and industry across the South West.”
