Love Food Hate Waste17th November, 2009
Oh my, Julie's been at the oats again. Here's our top tips on how to avoid kitchen waste and make the most of your meals... Last chance to win with Love Beauty Hate Waste in Devon
Don’t let Devon go to waste have come up with some fresh ideas to help you use up stray ingredients – natural beauty.
Helping to reduce food waste can also win you some fantastic prizes. This week is the last chance to make the South West Love Food Hate Waste pledge and be entered for the prize draw at www.lovefoodhatewaste.com/southwest.
Statistics show that too much of the food we buy ends up being thrown away. Recipes calling for only egg yolks or whites, or curries that don’t need that whole tub of yoghurt lead to perfectly good food being discarded.
Face masks, body scrubs and hair conditioners can be made from many natural ingredients that are left lying around in the fridge. For example a quick pore – tightening face mask can be made with an egg white – simply add one drop of rose geranium oil to an egg white, mix and apply to the face. Leave until dry and wash off.
Yoghurt and honey make a great body scrub which can be used as an exfoliator with the addition of oats or coffee grounds. Or mash some avocado with an egg yolk for a conditioning treatment for dry and damaged hair.
Liz Poulter, Senior Waste Manager for Devon County Council said: “These ideas are a great way to use up leftover food, creating natural cosmetics that can help both your bank balance and your skin!”
Pledges must be made by November 20th to win a gourmet weekend for four in St Ives or Ilfracombe, dinner for two in Dorset’s Restaurant of the Year 2009 or a bespoke cookery lesson for two at a cookery school in Bristol.
