Kingskerswell Road Schedule Announced

7th January, 2015
The schedule for construction of the Decoy Link Road has been announced by Devon County Council, Teignbridge District Council and Galliford Try, the company responsible for building the road.

Kingskerswell Road is to be closed from just past the entrance to Buckland Athletic Football Club through to the junction with Priory Road for approximately four months while road widening and straightening takes place. Priory Road will remain open.

The Decoy Link Road is a £2.6million scheme which will improve the narrow roads around the area and provide cycling and pedestrian facilities around the Decoy Industrial Estate.

The decision to close the road whilst this work is undertaken has been made to accelerate the project and reduce overall disruption to residents.

Chris Hastings, Project Director at Galliford Try, said: “The existing road is very narrow and drivers regularly experience difficulty in passing. It would be extremely difficult to undertake these road improvements and keep traffic flowing normally – if we did it would take much longer to complete, adding inconvenience to local residents and road users for a greater period of time.

“Numerous sets of traffic lights would be required if construction was to take place whilst keeping the road open, which would cause long delays and increase journey times.”

Councillor Andrew Leadbetter, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Economy and Growth, said: “We realise that this temporary closure may be a difficult adjustment for some residents, but this upgrade to the road is essential to accommodate the expansion of the Silverhills industrial estate.

“Some level of disruption is unfortunately inevitable, but we are doing our best to minimise this. Ultimately the new route will be a huge boost to the local economy and allow the area to grow and prosper.”

Devon County Councillor Gordon Hook, said: “ I hope it will be accepted that although there will be some short term pain, I am optimistic that there will be a definite long term gain. Inevitably there will be some disruption but I will continue to work with Devon County Council and Galliford Try to keep this to a minimum. I encourage residents to talk to me if there are specific concerns. ”

Cllr Jeremy Christophers, Leader of Teignbridge District Council, said: “There are a number of road improvement schemes currently underway across the district which will create the essential infrastructure people are seeking to cut travel times. Teignbridge has invested in this scheme with an aim of creating more jobs on the Decoy Industrial Estate. We hope road users can be patient during the closure whilst looking forward to the benefits of better access in the future.”

It is anticipated that this work will reduce the amount of traffic along some roads but it may increase Heavy Goods Vehicle usage through others.

The road closure is scheduled to take place from Monday 19th January at 07:00 and is anticipated to remain closed for up to four months.

Work is set to widen and realign the existing Kingskerswell Road and create a signal controlled crossing over the rail bridge. The works will also improve safety along the busy route for pedestrians and cyclists, with a new shared cycleway and footway.

The upgrade of the road aims to accommodate the extra traffic around the Silverhills Industrial Estate area - the industrial estate is currently home to 25 businesses, but is due to expand to create around 500 new jobs.
