Plymouth graduate Kieren Couch is celebrating after being named as one of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) President’s Apprentices 2011-12.

Kieren, who studied at the University of Plymouth, is a graduate member of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) South West and works as a Civil/Highways Contacts Sub-Agent Technician for Cormac, part of Cornwall Council Highways Service.

The President’s Apprentice Initiative started in 2005 and is open to graduate members of ICE who are working towards their professional qualification.

Kieren is one of just six apprentices chosen from across the UK who will have the opportunity to observe how a senior, influential figure in the industry operates, learn a range of new skills and gain a better understanding of the workings of ICE.

Kieren, who is based in Camborne, will also attend major influencing events or meetings with figures such as senior civil servants or ministers and engage with ICE members in the region.

Kieren said: “I am elated that I have been successful in gaining the opportunity to work alongside and be mentored by the President.

“I am certain that I will gain a real insight into the work portrayed by the Institution and I look forward to developing my experience in the industry.”

Kieren, 24, recently completed his Civil Engineering studies through the University of Plymouth on a part time basis. He has worked for his employer for six years, after starting at 18 as an apprentice Roadworker.

Richard Coackley, who will take over as ICE President from Peter Hansford in November, said it had been a tough task selecting six graduates from a diverse pool of very strong applicants, but was confident he had selected “six energetic and inspiring young engineers”.

He said: “I’m looking forward to hearing their views on the many challenges facing the world today and how we, as engineers, can help with finding the solutions.”

Kieren will be taking on the title of President’s Apprentice from November 2011 for a full year.
