Vegetable Knowledge Could Win Shoppers Prizes
29th July, 2010
EAGLE-EYED shoppers are being urged to swot up on their greens in the latest competition being run by environmental group, Saltash Environmental Action (SEA).
SEA has planted a variety of ‘Veg in Beds’, and are asking people to guess which herbs and vegetables have appeared in the flower beds managed by Saltash Town Council in the town's Fore Street.
The Council has given SEA permission to use the planters for the competition as part of the Saltash in Transition (SiT) initiative. They will be planting and harvesting throughout the summer.
The competition runs from 26 June to 16 July with prizes for the first correct adult and children's entry pulled from the bag.
Nearby shopkeepers are acting as 'guardians' to the plants. Adam Killeya, Chair of SEA said: “More than a dozen different edible plants have been chosen to blend in with each flower bed by local gardeners the Hine Brothers.
“We're really hoping lots of people will get involved with this competition and see what's growing right under their noses. We want to encourage people to think about where they could grow their own veg and herbs.”
The competition is part of SEA's Grow Your Own campaign, which has included two successful Gardeners' Question Time events.
Entry is free and competition forms will be available from Piglets, A&N Health Foods and The Bookshop.
