Flood Defences Win Top Regional Award

29th July, 2010

THE contractors on the Chivenor Flood Defence Scheme at the Royal Marine Barracks on the Taw Estuary are celebrating their success at the Civil Engineering Project of the Year awards run by the Institution of Civil Engineers South West.

Debut Services (South West) Ltd were contractors on the scheme, which was declared the winner of the Major Project of the Year Award 2010. Other companies involved in this project were Hoare Lea Partnership, BAM Nuttall, Mitie Engineering and Black and Veatch Consulting Ltd.

Debut were also runners up for Portreath Remedial works; this project had to ensure a former Chemical Defence Establishment complied with current “Contaminated land” regulations.

Paul Nix, Debut’s Core Works Director, said: “We are honoured to have won these prestigious awards from the Institution of Civil Engineers, which recognise the outstanding achievements on the Chivenor Flood Defence project and RAF Portreath Remediation scheme.

“At Debut we pride ourselves on the on the hard work and commitment of our project teams and the relationships with our Clients and supply chain partners.  Recognition for the successful delivery of two diverse and complex civil engineering projects is testament to the benefits of collaborative working and the Regional Prime Contract South West.”

The flood defence scheme was needed to enable the continued use of Chivenor as a marine base. Situated on the Taw Estuary, the area is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The Scheme attracted plaudits for its environmental sensitivity, use of recycled vinyl and future proof design.

The objective of the awards is to recognise construction projects completed in 2009 within the South West of particular merit, physical achievement, innovation or ingenuity which promotes the excellence of the engineering profession.

Winners of the Minor Project of the Year were the John Grimes Partnership, working with Landmark Trust and MR Gunite Saxton drilling for their work on the stabilisation of the access road on Lundy Island.

The judges commented that the scheme employed a sensitive mix of geotechnical engineering solutions to suit the sensitive environment.

Highly commended in the Major Project of the Year was BAM Nuttall’s Phase 1 of the Bristol City Docks Operating Infrastructure Project. Runners-up were Debut Services (South West), Enviros and BAM Nuttall for Portreath Remedial Works.

The award for the ICE South West Graduates and Students Papers competition was also presented at the ICE South West Awards ceremony. The competition was won by Anthony Pearson, a graduate member of ICE South West and the next Chairman of the ICE South West Graduates and Students Committee. Anthony’s paper was on ‘Civil Engineering Support to Hydropower Stations in Mountainous Environments’. Anthony, who lives in Bath, works for RWE npower in Swindon.

The 2010 ICE awards ceremony was held at the Grand Hotel, Bristol, on 4 June.
