Cash Prizes For Schools Extended
28th July, 2010
SCHOOLS could be in line for hundreds of pounds in prize money if their pupils are the lucky winners of any of the five categories in a local competition.
There are plenty of exciting prizes for the students too, including the opportunity to spend time with a professional TV and film production company, the chance to work with a professional photographer and trips to London.
These are some of the prizes in the Community Cohesion Competition, open to all primary and secondary school pupils at Devon County Council-run schools.
The competition aims to get youngsters exploring the diversity of Devon’s communities and coming up with new ways to tackle prejudice and discrimination.
Students have been invited to take photographs, make films, design posters, create assemblies and develop projects as part of five separate categories.
The organiser of the contest – the Safer Devon Partnership – has now extended the deadline for entries until Friday 28 May.
The winning team of the film category will win work experience with a professional film production company while the winning school will get £500 to spend on film-making equipment.
Photography winners will also be able to improve their talents – the top four photographers will spend time working in a studio, or on location, with a professional photographer. Their school will also get £500 to spend on photography equipment.
Art materials worth up to £500 will also be available for the school which wins the poster category. Furthermore, the winning artists will see their posters printed and distributed for display around all Devon schools, libraries and post offices as part of a wider anti-prejudice media campaign.
A trip to the theatre and/or the chance to take part in a theatre workshop are the prizes for the winners of the assembly category.
A visit to London – including a guided tour of the Houses of Parliament – is the exciting prize for the winners of the project category while the school receives £500.
There are separate categories for primary and secondary schools.
All the prizewinners will be honoured at a special community cohesion event at Devon County Council in June. Their entries will be exhibited alongside work from other community projects undertaken by minority groups from across Devon.
The judging panel is made up of:
Hannah Vincent, Pangaea TV
Paul Ridgers, RH Advertising
Mark Baptist, Teacher, Queen Elizabeth’s Community College
Jennie Beams, Community Artist
Andrew McClenaghan, Youth Issues Manager, Devon and Cornwall Police
Chukumeka Maxwell, Manager, Devon PCT Community Development Team
Chukumeka Maxwell said: “This competition shows there are fun ways of promoting inclusion and diversity. Kids can really get creative. It’s about more than pupils being lectured at about equality – they are actually engaging in the process.”
Fellow judge Hannah Vincent added: “I can’t wait to look through all the entries. Pangaea TV is really pleased to be involved with this competition as we’re always keen to support new talent. It’s not often that young people get work experience with a film production company and it will be a great chance for the lucky winners to develop their skills. In fact, there are lots of great prizes to be won – whatever your talents – so get working on your entries.”
