Board Welcomes Joint Working Arrangements

24th August, 2010

The Plymouth Employment and Skills Board (ESB) has welcomed a commitment by councils in the far South West to work together to boost the peninsula’s economy.

Local authorities in Torbay, Devon, Plymouth, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly have pledged their commitment to work closely together to deliver more jobs and greater growth and wealth for the South West peninsula.

The councils are acting in response to the government’s proposal for the creation of Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs), which will in part replace the current Regional Development Agencies.

Graham Stirling, chairman of the Plymouth Employment and Skills Board, said: “This is an excellent development and provides the best possible platform for a successful peninsula LEP bid.

“We have shown in the past, on many occasions, that by working together we have a much stronger voice and, with the right structure, all interests can be effectively represented.”

The authorities are working with business to devise a submission to the government on partnership arrangements.

One of the priorities for the new partnership will be improving skills levels of young people and  creating training opportunities, also a key priority of the ESB.
