MPs Listen To Engineers’ Priorities For The Region
26th October, 2010
THE Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) met with the region’s MPs at a series of briefings to present and discuss its priorities for the South West, as detailed in the State of the Nation Report on Infrastructure.
ICE South West members met with politicians, business people and key stakeholders at two sessions in Bristol and Plymouth.
Attendees included representatives from local authorities, Bristol Airport, the Met Office, the Universities of Bristol and Plymouth, the Devon and Cornwall Business Council and South West Highways.
As well as discussing the priorities, delegates were formally introduced to Trish Johnson, the new regional director of ICE South West.
Mrs Johnson said: “Both days were extremely useful for ICE as they allowed us to engage with the key influencers and stakeholders in the region. The briefings also gave us the chance to put forward our priorities for ensuring the South West region does not get left behind when it comes to critical infrastructure investment – whether it be in transport, waste or energy.
“We hope to hold similar briefings in the future to keep MPs and stakeholders informed of our position on these important matters.”
ICE South West chairman Nick Lyness gave an infrastructure overview before Rob Hetherington, Devon County Council’s chief economist, talked about the region’s economic position.
There were presentations on energy, waste, transport and flooding before the sessions finished with a question and answer session.
