An exhibition to update residents and businesses on the new Energy from Waste plant in Exeter is being held on 24 January at the Devon Hotel, Matford.
Construction is due to start later this spring on the site of the former incinerator at Grace Road, with the plant accepting waste from summer 2014. It will treat waste from Exeter, East Devon & Teignbridge.
Councillor Roger Croad, Cabinet Member for the Environment and Community said: “We would encourage everyone to come and find out more about the new facility. It will treat waste after all recycling and composting has taken place, so recycling is still very much a priority for us.
“As the top county in the country for recycling, we are very grateful for the efforts made by residents in Devon which has enabled us to achieve a fantastic rate of 55%. We are aiming to reach 60% by 2015/16, so it will remain an important concern for us as well as a vital part of our whole approach to waste treatment.“
Councillor Vanessa Newcombe, local Member for Alphington and Cowick said: ” This is an important development for the area. It will bring new jobs and a new dimension to our waste disposal. It’s important that people can understand how the process will work and what they can do to reduce waste and recycle more.
“This is the first of such plants in Devon and I am pleased we are able to lead the way with a facility that has been designed with the needs of Exeter’s residents in mind.”
The exhibition will open from 1500 until 2000 at the Devon Hotel, Matford. Officers from Devon County Council, its waste contractor Viridor and sub-contractor TIRU will be on hand to answer any questions and provide further information.
