Engineers Welcome Commitment To Low-Carbon Technologies In Spending Review

26th October, 2010

A host of local transport projects and wider low carbon measures have been welcomed by the Institution of Civil Engineers South West (ICE).

The low carbon measures, outlined in the Government’s Comprehensive Spending Review, include £1bn for a Green Investment Bank, £1bn for a commercial scale carbon capture and storage demonstrator project, £200m for offshore wind technology and manufacturing at port sites and £860m for the Renewable Heat Incentive.

ICE South West is also supportive of plans to invest in a number of major transport projects in the region. These are:

  • £32m support for Augusta Westland civil rotocraft design and manufacture
  • M4/M5 hard shoulder running and variable speed limits north of Bristol
  • Poole bridge – new bridge providing link to key development sites
  • Weymouth 2012 package – an integrated transport package to be delivered in time for the Olympics.

Trish Johnson, Regional Director for ICE South West, said: “We are pleased to see there is support for growth and investment, particularly in low carbon technologies, in this review.

“These measures could benefit communities across the South West but it’s important to undertake effective public consultation and involve people in the process of development of any major critical infrastructure.”

“We also welcome the investment in transport schemes as a robust and resilient network is vital for the region.”

The Renewable Heat Incentive, which many thought would be scrapped in the Spending Review, will see people paid for every unit of renewable heat they produce.
