Green Apple Award For Popular Food Waste Campaign

30th November, 2010

A CAMPAIGN which aimed to encourage people to waste less food has won a prestigious international award.

The South West Love Food Hate Waste campaign has been given a coveted Gold Green Apple award under the category of partnership working.

The nomination was made by the South West Waste and Recycling Forum, which organised the last autumn's month-long campaign along with support from the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) and the Love Food Hate Waste campaign.

The campaign was aimed at promoting waste reduction and encouraging people to think more about how they could reduce food waste through simple changes in behaviour.

People were asked to make pledges to make these steps and all pledges were entered into a draw to win a host of prizes, including a weekend break and cooking lessons with a top chef.

It received support from a number of the region's most high-profile figures, including radio presenter Judi Spiers, Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies and the Plymouth Raiders basketball team.

Dave Moore, chair of the South West Waste Recycling Forum, said: "It's fantastic to receive this recognition from a prominent organisation like Green Apple."

"We were really pleased with the impact the campaign had. Thousands of people pledged to take simple steps to change their behaviour, such as not cooking too much food, or not buying too much in the first place. Much of our uneaten food gets thrown out, which is also a waste of money for hard-pressed families."

"This award shows that Green Apple thought our message was an important one."

Representatives from the South West Waste Recycling Forum attended yesterday's (Monday's) awards presentation at the House of Commons in London.
